Mike and Teague secure victory with last minutes goals (on a beautiful sunny January day)!
Thursday 31st January 2007, break time
Team 1: Orun, Ashley, Craig, Anamul, Adam
Team 2: Lewis, Mike, Teague, Anton, (subs. Patricia and Sabrina, played for a couple of minutes)
Final score :3-2 (or possibly 3-1)
My debut footy blog! And getting it started was met with some reluctance as some players refused to have their photos taken; but all worked out for the best as I used my powers of persuasion and charm to get some lovely, dashing photographs of the team. I think I’m also winning them round to this idea of reporting on their play.
It was a short game due to the nature of it being break time, but full of action and pace nevertheless. The first couple of minutes saw a great run down the side of practically the entire pitch by Lowe who put a lovely driving shot past Lewis. This was followed by some two good shots on target by Jonas-the next Rosicky- which were saved by Lewis. The game then turned a bit messy and scrappy, with players piling on top of one another and trying to get the ball away from the trees. Patricia left her team (after a promising performance, but is returning to her rugby roots after this cameo football appearance) and Sabrina wondered off somewhere, but Orun remained as goalkeeper representing for the girls and made some brave and crucial saves, sacrificing herself as the ball was wacked at her. This rugged style of play is characteristic of the 6th formers and hailed back to the good old day of “scrambles”. It would have Arsene Wenger up in arms and all the Arsenal players weeping until the Emirates was filled with their tears-their smooth and controlled play is the antithesis to what is witnessed here. This is not a criticism of the 6th formers play, just an observation, and they always make for an exciting match as well as delivering goal wise.
At one point there was a debate over a “goal” by Ashley, it was not a goal, it was just over the invisible posts, but Dan appealed and it was promptly quashed. Just as the bell was about to go and it was thought the match would be a draw, Mike delivered a last minute goal as he hit a forceful shot which slipped past Orun sending her the wrong way. With only seconds, Teague furthered the lead and sealed victory for Team 2 with an impressive goal. Orum, who had given a top class performance all match was forced to surrender to the might of the two tall and long haired ginger and brunette respectively.
Man of the Match: Orun (for some great saves on her debut)
Scores out of 10:
Ashley
Anamul
Craig
Adam
Teague
Lewis
Mike
Teague
Anton
(ummmmm, I’m not sure about giving scores for play for this match, it was very short so I didn’t really get a chance to watch each player and give a mark that is reflective of their performance.)
